Standard canvas sizes (inches and cm)

Pick the canvas proportion that matches your image first — then the size. Cropping a 4:3 phone photo to 3:2 cuts off part of the picture; choosing a 4:3 canvas keeps all of it.

Which proportion is my image?

Divide the long side by the short side in pixels: 1.5 is 3:2, 1.33 is 4:3, 1.25 is 5:4, 1 is square, 2 is 2:1, 3 is 3:1.

Canvas size charts

Sizes are shown landscape; turn them around for portrait. The pixel column shows a common target of 150 pixels per inch for canvas — the texture of canvas hides a little softness, so somewhat fewer pixels usually still prints well at large sizes.

Which size for my wall?

Over furniture, go about two-thirds of its width (sofa, bed). On a bare wall, art that covers 60–75% of the open space looks intentional. For anything wider than about 72 in, consider a 3-panel set.

Questions

What is the most common canvas size?

For living rooms, 24 × 36 in, 30 × 40 in and 36 × 48 in are among the most popular; 16 × 20 in and 18 × 24 in suit smaller walls.

How many pixels do I need for a canvas print?

A common target is about 150 pixels per inch — for example 3600 × 5400 px for a 24 × 36 in canvas.

What canvas size fits a phone photo?

Most phone photos are 4:3, so 16 × 12, 24 × 18, 32 × 24 or 40 × 30 in keep the whole picture.
