Three-panel (triptych) wall art: sizes and spacing

A 3-panel set should be about two-thirds of the furniture or wall section it hangs over, measured across all three panels, with 2–3 in (5–8 cm) between panels.

2–3 in overall width = 3 panels + 2 gaps

Triptych size chart

The total size is the three panels together; each panel is one third of the width. The overall width on the wall adds the two gaps.

Spacing between panels

Which panel layout fits

Wide images (2:1 and 3:1) split naturally into three tall panels; a 3:2 image split in three gives panels close to 1:2. Square images rarely split well.

Hanging height

Treat the set as one piece: center it at 57–60 in, or keep 8–10 in above a sofa. Hang the middle panel first, then the outer two using the gap spacer. More in how high to hang art.

Questions

How far apart should 3-panel art be?

About 2–3 in (5–8 cm) between panels; 2 in keeps a split image reading as one picture.

How big should a triptych be over a sofa?

About two-thirds of the sofa width across all three panels — around 56–60 in total for an 84 in sofa.

How do I hang a triptych evenly?

Hang the middle panel first at the right height, then use a spacer block of the gap width to place the outer panels.
